Design Process: Creating a logo

With the relaunch of Phoenix Studios last week came numerous design changes including a brand new logo. Here is some insight into the process I followed to create it.

I began by making very rough thumbnail sketches to get some ideas flowing. I find that this is the best way to start the process.

I selected one of the ideas and created an actual sketch of the basic logo shape.

Once I was happy with the sketch I scanned it and brought it into Illustrator. From there I began using circles to outline the logo.

Using the circles as a guide I started to define the curves of the wings, head and feathers of the phoenix.

I experimented with different colours and stroke widths while finalising the logo. It was important to get the line thickness right, so that the logo was more defined at smaller sizes.
