2014: A Creative Year In Review

Posted by in Design, Discussion, Freelance, Phoenix Studios on December 30, 2014

It’s  been an amazing year with a great deal of change. To start 2015 fresh I thought I’d recap on some of the creative highlights of this year.

January 2014 – May 2014 – Phoenix Studios Relaunch

Having launched originally in 2009, my portfolio and brand went through a massive revamp. As any designer will tell you, creating your own brand is the hardest thing you will ever do.

May 2014 – Meat Creative Conference

Back in May I attended Meat Conference, a small creative conference up in Aberdeen, Scotland.

The event, speakers and organisers were amazing! I was fortunate enough to meet and hang out with my top two design heroes: James White from Signalnoise and Aaron Draplin from DDC. These guys were so cool and friendly, I was blown away!

May 2014 – New Artwork Released

With my creative juices pumped up after the conference, I released two new pieces of artwork, one of which I had started several years ago but never finished.

June 2014 – Soccer Hotshots Side Project

Inspired by my favourite designers and their personal projects, I launched my first side project: ‘Soccer Hotshots’. A series of unofficial ads from famous brands related to soccer and the World Cup.

Here are a few of the ads which I created for the project:

Responses from brands on Twitter:

July 2014 – Fabric8

During the summer I branded a start up agency, creating everything including the brand mark, illustrations, documentation and website. A great creative challenge which I really enjoyed!

October 2014 – Freelance

After 12 years working in the creative industry, I decided to take the plunge and go freelance. So far it’s been an extremely positive experience and I’ve been fortunate enough to work on an amazing project which will be revealed next year!

November 2014 – Behance Portfolio Review

I attended a Behance Portfolio Review which allows designers to have their portfolios reviewed by industry leaders. As I am quite new to Behance it was great to get advice on my portfolio and network with other designers.

Coming Soon in 2015

My first pop art project ‘Avengestars’ will be released in the new year, stay tuned!
