After over 10 years of making things I’ve found that the path of creativity is never a straight line. There are many highs and lows and sometimes it’s all too easy to feel like you’re hitting your head against a stack of guitar amps!  So here are some tips on ways to stay creative.

1. Write it all down.

Ever woken up at 2am having just had some crazy dream? If the answer is ‘yes’ then write down what it was about. This is key for when you’re lacking inspiration and need a cool idea for your next project. I highly recommend investing in a decent notepad like Aaron Draplin’s Field Notes.

2. Step away from the iDevices.

While I may be a massive Apple geek, sometimes you’ve got to get away from the screen and into the real world. The real inspiration is in the things which are often right in front of us, rather than on the internet.

3. Break the rules and be a rebel.

Want to do a drawing of the Hulk? Just get it done and put it out there, even if it’s something you’re not being paid for. Your personal passion for creativity is what counts.

4. Travel & Adventure. Just like Indiana Jones!

Even if you live in the coolest place, new surroundings can influence your creative juices in a positive way. Sometimes getting away from it all can be your ticket to a new world of creativity.

5. Lists of lists of lists.

Just like point number 1, making lists of ideas as you think of them is good practice for any creative person to follow. I personally use Things by Cultured Code to organise my lists, as the app lets me put items into  projects also.

6. Rock out with a musical instrument.

Having another creative outlet like music is a great way of expressing yourself . So pick up an axe and rock out!

7. Getting personal.. with personal projects.

Creating your own project where you have complete freedom and control of your output can be extremely liberating creatively.

8. Go to meetups & conferences and mingle.

Talking to other people in both your field and also other fields can help broaden your creative horizons.

9. Tidy your personal workspace.

It’s amazing what a difference a little spring cleaning can do for your creativity.

10. Break your routine

We’re all creatures of habit and breaking the mould can make you more creative. Never made a design with a certain colour? Give it a try.
