It’s been a crazy first 6 months as a freelancer and along the way I’ve discovered that certain traits I’ve adopted to improve myself as a designer are actually similar to animals. Here are a few animal instincts you can use to better yourself:

1. Turn up your design speed like a Cheetah

Designers undeniably need talent, but they also need speed to hit deadlines. Adopt the cheetah’s raw speed in your process, find ways of getting things done quicker and focus less on ‘perfection’ but more on getting the job done right.

2. Hunt for work like a Wolf

Getting work can be tough as a freelancer, so it pays sometimes to hunt for it in a pack just like a Wolf. Ask friends and family if they know anyone who needs a designer to start. Then sniff around social media as jobs are posted regularly.

3. Be strong like a Bear when receiving client feedback

When a client asks for amends it can be easy to growl and roar, but instead be strong like a Bear. Say yes often but also know when to make a tough decision and tell the client ‘no’.

4. Be fearless like the Shark

Freelancing is a scary thing! The lack of regular income alone is enough to put most people off the idea. So when commiting to the journey you have to be fearless, just like a Shark. If you want to design something for your dream client then just do it, if you need more clients go out there and get them.

5. When making business decisions be wise like the Owl

The skillset needed to be good at business is very different to that of being a good designer. Be wise like an Owl, don’t undersell yourself, get an accountant, understand your finances. It’s all part of the wisdom needed to be a freelancer.
